College hosts employer events to help tackle skills shortages

South Staffordshire College is hosting a series of events to help businesses tackle skills shortages and develop future talent.

The college is inviting businesses across Staffordshire and the West Midlands to take part in events focused on engineering and motor vehicle skills, as well as its Skills Advisory Panels later this month.

The Motor Vehicle and EV Employer Event at Rodbaston College between 8.30am and 11am on 24 November will give employers the chance to meet Motor Vehicle students, tour the college’s specialist facilities and talk to the team about apprenticeships, workforce training and the support available to their business.

Ahmed Hussein, the college’s Faculty Director for Motor Vehicle and Engineering, said: “We want to work closely with local employers to understand the skills they need, both now and in the future.

“This event gives businesses the chance to meet our students, talk to our team and explore how apprenticeships and training could help them develop the workforce they need.”

Meanwhile, the Engineering Apprenticeships and Work Experience Webinar between 1pm and 2pm on 27 November will explore how businesses can attract new talent, introduce young people to careers in engineering through work experience and use apprenticeships to recruit and develop employees.

Employers will also hear about training and support available through the college to address existing skills gaps and develop their current workforce.

Business Development Advisor Tracy Kerr said: “Engineering businesses need skilled people now, but they also need to think about where their workforce will come from in five or ten years’ time. Building that pipeline doesn’t start when a vacancy becomes difficult to fill. It starts much earlier.

“We want this session to give employers practical information about the options available and show how we can work alongside them to develop the skills their businesses need.”

The college is also holding Skills Advisory Panels, inviting employers to help shape its curriculum and ensure students develop the skills local industries need.

The sessions will bring businesses and college teams together to discuss current and future workforce requirements. Employers can also build links with staff and students, hear about relevant funding opportunities and connect with potential future employees.

John Adams, Assistant Principal for Commercial and Employer Engagement, said: “Our Skills Advisory Panels give businesses an opportunity to share that knowledge with us and influence what we teach.

“By working together, we can make sure our curriculum keeps pace with industry, gives students the skills employers are looking for and helps businesses develop the local talent they need to grow.”

Businesses of all sizes are welcome, whether or not they already work with the college.

The panels will take place from 2pm to 4.30pm at:

  • Monday 23 November – Lichfield College
  • Tuesday 24 November – Cannock College
  • Wednesday 25 November – Rodbaston College
  • Thursday 26 November – Tamworth College
