Fortnight of road works on busy commuter route

1 min read

Motorists are facing further traffic uncertainty from Monday as a fortnight of highway improvements begin along a stretch of the A34.

Staffordshire County Council’s highways teams will be carrying out works at The Fillybrooks/Walton Roundabout, the A520 Stafford Road and the B5026 Eccleshall Road near Stone.

The exploratory works are ahead of a major resurfacing scheme in April, part of a £5.2 million investment by the county council into improving eight major gateways into the county’s towns.

The work is expected to take around two weeks to complete and will include extensive drainage cleaning, along with detailed surveys of the road surface and excavation of trial holes.

Access will be maintained for residents and businesses during the works where possible and disruption kept to a minimum, the council has said.

Overnight works will start on Monday 16 January for five nights with a road closure of the B5026 Eccleshall Road, and lane closures of the A34 The Fillybrooks/Walton Roundabout and A520 Stafford Road.  The B5026 Eccleshall Road will be closed from the A34 to Tilling Drive from 8pm to 6am each night.

A diversion will be in place via the A34, A51, A519 through Eccleshall and B5026 to Stone and vice versa.

From Monday 23 January temporary lane closures will then be in place during day times until Friday 27 January.

It coincides with five months of resurfacing and barrier installation work on the M6, which is also due to start on Monday and will affect the motorway between Junction 15 and 17 until June 22.

Meanwhile, part of Glebe Street in Stoke remains closed until further notice on health and safety advice after a large pile driving machine toppled into a building at the £60 million Good Yards development.
