Local job-seekers, graduates and school leavers are being encouraged to explore career opportunities after the Home Office committed to creating 500 jobs at a new base in Stoke-on-Trent.
The Government Department has signed a lease to use Two Smithfield in Hanley to establish an innovation centre, which will accommodate case-working roles and an asylum hub.
The deal for office space at the Stoke-on-Trent City Council-owned building totals more than 38,000 sq. ft over two floors. It forms part of a drive to move civil servants out of London.
The Home Office has confirmed that the first 100 vacancies have already been filled and recruitment continues.
Roles currently being advertised include 160 customer services administrative officers, with more to follow across the customer services, digital and operational teams. Many roles will provide apprenticeship opportunities to enable colleagues to earn as they learn.
Councillor Abi Brown, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming the Home Office to Stoke-on-Trent in a move which will bring hundreds of new jobs to the city and make the Home Office a major employer.
“I would urge job-seekers, school leavers and university graduates to explore the local opportunities which are being created by the Home Office.”
A statement from the Home Office said: “We’re now in the process of establishing a new Innovation Centre in Stoke-on-Trent, which will accommodate case-working roles and an asylum hub.
“Over the next five years, the Stoke hub will accommodate more than 500 roles in total, bringing a range of different functions and jobs to the city.
“This project will also provide a pipeline of exciting career paths for the local community, with an apprentice-first policy for hiring at junior grades.”
