An apprenticeship is helping Ben Bartle reach for the stars in his career at Jodrell Bank Observatory and also monitor a high-profile satellite array sent into orbit by Elon Musk’s space corporation.
Ben had already been working for three years as an assistant telescope technician at the world-famous astrophysics centre when his manager encouraged him to apply for a place at NSCG Newcastle College.
The course, which includes attendance one day a week at the College, is allowing him to develop his skills such as welding and performing heavy duty repairs.
And as part of his apprenticeship, the 20-year-old is also managing his own Starlink project for which he has built a specialised tracking device.
Thanks to his mechanical skills this will detect radio interference from Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink satellite network and ascertain how it impacts radio astronomy.
A typical day might see him carry out welding repairs on the telescope, greasing the wheels or even managing the upkeep of the grounds.
“My apprenticeship course is definitely going to give me more opportunities and help me progress up the career ladder quicker,” said Ben.
“I’m really happy at Jodrell Bank and see myself working there for a long time, hopefully progressing into managerial roles one day.
“I am starting to manage my own projects now and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do this if it wasn’t for my apprenticeship.
“My college assessor is great and really helpful. We have regular meetings to catch up, I can ask him anything and he’s always there to help.
“If you want to continue your education, an apprenticeship is a great way to do it whilst gaining vital hands-on experience and skills. You also finish with no debt hanging over you but great career prospects.”
