Staffordshire-based street furniture specialist Broxap has been named as winner in the Environmental Practices category of the Scotland Excel Awards.

The award recognises the company’s work to reduce waste, cut carbon emissions and lower energy consumption through a continuous investment programme in sustainable manufacturing systems.

Broxap is a leading UK designer, manufacturer and installer of street furniture; shelters, canopies and covered walkways; cycle parking infrastructure and outdoor gym and playground equipment.

While reducing the environmental cost of manufacturing, Broxap also keeps existing materials and resources in circulation for longer – not just at its production facility but in locations where it is implementing recycling-on-the-go infrastructure.

Among the improvements at Broxap’s 125,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in North Staffordshire is a new state-of-the-art automated powder coating line, which generates no wastewater, a fibre laser cutting machine, which uses a third less energy than CO2 counterparts, and briquetting technology which converts shavings and sawdust into bales that are burned cleanly in heater units.

Stuart Angus, Broxap’s Regional Sales Director for Scotland, said: “As an official supplier of litter bins and recycling bins to Scotland’s public sector through the Scotland Excel procurement framework, our products aim to make a positive impact, improving the natural and built environment for current and future generations.

“And through our investment programme Project Transform we aim to lead by example, putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do.

“As we strive to achieve our net zero targets, this award recognises the commitment Broxap has made to invest in and develop innovative strategies around waste management, energy consumption, emissions, biodiversity and responsible procurement.

“The changes we are making are accelerating our progress towards our goals and reducing our environmental impact while maintaining high levels of product quality and service for our clients.”

Scotland Excel’s Chief Executive, Julie Welsh said: “As the national centre of procurement expertise for local government, it is important for us to recognise the vital role of businesses that go the extra mile when providing goods and services through our portfolio of frameworks.

“Suppliers to our contracts deliver value for money for the public while implementing innovative approaches to benefit the public sector and communities, and its right and fitting that we take the time to recognise those who demonstrate excellence when supporting delivery of essential services.”
