The Managing Director of North Staffordshire marketing communications consultancy Plinkfizz joined a group of experts debating Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the House of Commons.

Fiona Hawkins, who is also a Board Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, was invited to the debate, entitled: “Artificial Intelligence is less threatening to public relations and marketing practitioners than the lack of professional development across both industries”.

The debate, sponsored jointly by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and Chartered Institute of Marketing, further enhanced the understanding of AI’s potential impact on skills within the marketing sector.

It looked at how AI will impact on current career landscapes for the marketing agency and marketing services industry workforce; and what the implications for ongoing learning and development will be.

Following the opening statements of the Proposer, Jenni Field, Former CIPR President; Opposer, Dr Mike Katell, Ethics Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute; and their seconders, Daniel Rowles, CIM Course Director (Proposer) and Amir S Jan Malik, Digital Transformation Leader at Accenture (Opposer), the floor was opened for guests to debate.

Fiona said: “Going into the event, I was keen to understand the impacts AI will have on careers in marketing and the implications for ongoing learning and development.”

It was reassuring to hear other leaders in the sector had similar views and discussions around embracing AI rather than rejecting its opportunities. It is clear, however, that AI needs to be used professionally and ethically in the marketing world.”
