Social media stars and faces of Phat Lad Competitions host first family fun day for charity

The owners of a competition business are hosting a fun day this weekend as their registered charity holds its first flagship event.

Reece Thornton-Bate set up Phat Lads Competitions in 2020 and, along with his dad Paul Bate, has since given away more than £1 million in prizes to over 1,000 winners.

As reported by Daily Focus, the pair set up a charitable foundation earlier this year to build on the fundraising activities and donations they’ve made since launching the company – including delivering food parcels and paying for medical equipment.

The Phat Lads Charitable Foundation is hosting a fundraising day at Packmoor Community Hall, on Lorraine Street, in Packmoor, Stoke-on-Trent, on Sunday 16 July, between 1pm and 5pm.

All the money raised from the fun day will go to support other families in need and causes on a case-by case-basis.

The event, which is free to enter, will include: a DJ, fairground rides, a bouncy castle, sumo suits, cash bar, refreshments including an ice cream van, burger van, craft stall, as well as a live competition with giveaways on stage with the Phat Lads themselves.

There will also be a ‘tat tombola’ where people can win random items of tat, inspired by a free feature of the pair’s Phat Lads Competition Facebook Live which takes place every Wednesday.

Reece, from Cheadle, said: “We’re really excited to be hosting our first official event this Sunday. It’s been months in the planning and there are lots of things happening on the day.

“We wanted to organise something for all the family that would not only raise money for the Foundation but would essentially be a fun event where people can come together and have a good laugh at very little cost.

“Now that Phat Lads has got such a big presence online, it gives us a real platform to help families that need support through the Foundation and we’re looking forward to organising further events in the future to do exactly that.”

Paul added: “We’ve had lots of interest and would love to see as many people there as possible.

“It’s a chance to let your hair down and raise funds which will ultimately help those people who really need a bit of extra support.”

Reece and Paul, who have a massive social media following on Facebook and Twitter, recently raised more than £1,650 for a Stoke-on-Trent couple whose three-year old daughter Kayleigh had cancer and is now in remission. The sum helped pay for the transport costs for treatment in Birmingham and Manchester as the couple don’t drive.

Their charity has also donated £2,000 worth of ride on cars to Staffordshire Children’s Hospital at the Royal Hospital in Stoke, Crewe’s Leighton Hospital, and are planning to donate to other children’s hospitals in the future.

The pair also hope to set up a foodbank and a clothes shop for people that need support but that won’t have to pay a penny.

The charity’s website will be launched soon.
