Green light given for a new Stafford eatery

A former pub in Stafford town centre looks set to be turned into a restaurant/café.

Plans have been passed to change the use of the site once occupied by The Tavern, on Greengate Street.

As part of planning permission granted by Stafford Borough Council, the site will also undergo expansion with a three-storey side extension and a two-storey rear extension.

Five self-contained flats will be created on the upper floors.

It is not the first time plans to redevelop the site have been submitted.

A similar scheme for work at the site was submitted in 2020 but was refused.

Since then, the plans have been tweaked to reduce the width of the proposed rear extension and arrangements for bin storage have been changed.

The latest plans were determined under delegated powers.

A council report reads: “It is acknowledged that the site has not been in use as a drinking establishment for at least five years and therefore the re-use of the building for other appropriate town centre uses would facilitate in strengthening the local economy.”
