Businesses can seize chance to shape 10-year economic development plan for Stoke-on-Trent

1 min read

Businesses in Stoke-on-Trent are being urged to take part in a stakeholder consultation event to help shape the economic development of the city.

In May 2024, Stoke-on-Trent City Council adopted a new corporate strategy  called ‘Our City, Our Wellbeing’.

The authority says it sets out a vision for improving the wellbeing of residents by tackling inequality, sharing wealth more fairly with communities and raising living standards.

At the heart of it is developing an economic strategy which works better for everyone, and the council has identified a number of key priorities which it thinks the strategy will need to address. These include:

  • Supporting businesses to invest, innovate and grow, creating more good jobs.
  • Using the council’s influence and spending power to maximise economic and social benefits of procurement and investment.
  • Involving businesses and communities in developing new solutions to social and economic problems affecting their local areas.
  • Championing better quality employment and enabling residents to secure better work.
  • Revitalising high streets and town centres to provide imaginative new uses and facilities.

A citywide stakeholder consultation is now open and the council is keen to get views of everyone who lives, works, visits or runs a business in the city of Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce Policy Adviser Declan Riddell said: “As a Chamber, we will develop a response to Stoke on Trent City Council’s Economic Strategy and we encourage all businesses in the city to follow suit.

“The Strategy has a number of priorities such as supporting businesses to invest, innovate and grow, and using the council’s influence and spending power to maximise economic and social benefits of procurement and investment.

“The Strategy is a 10-year vision to develop a Wellbeing Economy and it’s vital that businesses have their say if the vision is to be realised.”

The consultation is open until 16.8.24. and can be opened here: Draft Economic Development Strategy Consultation | Draft Economic Development Strategy Consultation | Stoke-on-Trent
