A major highways improvements scheme in Newcastle-under-Lyme has got underway.
The £600,000 scheme is being carried out by Staffordshire County Council and is part of a wider £50 million investment in the county’s roads over the next three years.
The work on the A519 Brook Lane is expected to take around eight weeks to complete and will include reconstruction and resurfacing of the road, along with repairs and replacement of damaged kerbs and drainage as required.
To make sure the work can be carried out safely and to minimise disruption, a combination of temporary lane closures will be in operation, along with a few overnight closures for the resurfacing.
A signed diversion will be in place during the closures and access to businesses and residents in the works area will be maintained where possible.
Mark Deaville, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said: “Good roads are essential for people and for our local economy, which is why we are investing more than £50 million in highways over the next three years.
“This is a well-used road in Newcastle and it’s great to see the scheme get underway. As always, our crews will be doing their best to keep disruption to a minimum, which will include doing the resurfacing overnight when the road is quieter. I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience while this important work takes place.”
Simon Tagg, Leader at Newcastle Borough Council, said: “Brook Lane is one of the main roads in and out of the town centre, so it’s an important scheme for the borough. These long-awaited improvements will be welcomed by everyone who uses the road and once completed, we can look forward to smoother journeys into town.”
