Spa retreat hit by flash floods reopens today after ‘once in 105-year event’

Severe weather which caused the closure of a leading Staffordshire spa destination has been described as the worst in the family-run business’s 24-year history.

Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat was hit by an unprecedented weather event on 21 September which saw its facilities closed for almost five weeks.

Flood experts have labelled it a ‘once in 105-year event’.

Videos that circulated on social media showed gallons of water flowing through the building and site after heavy rain caused flash flooding and water and mud came in from the fields surrounding the valley where Moddershall Oaks is located.

The events venue reopened earlier this month and began hosting weddings straight away, whilst the spa will begin welcoming guests again today.

The Oak House restaurant will be open to spa guests during their visits, and it will fully reopen to external diners and drinkers, along with the Balcony Bar, on November 1.

Moddershall Oaks Director Penny Weston said: “We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve received from the community, local businesses, and guests during this challenging five weeks.

“Our focus throughout this time has been not only repairing, but enhancing the spa facilities, to ensure that when we reopened, we could offer an experience that feels as luxurious and relaxing as our guests have come to expect from us.

“The flooding was a completely unprecedented event for us, and we are excited to finally reopen our doors, and welcome our guests back. We look forward to being part of their special occasions once again.”

The incident came after Moddershall Oaks invested a six-figure sum into its events space earlier this year, as reported by Daily Focus here.

The major impact of the flood damage affected the retreats’ grounds, and the onsite restaurant The Oak House, and kitchen.

An army of contractors and the Moddershall Oaks team have worked around the clock to restore the property.

Damaged walls, flooring, decking and tiling have been removed and repaired, furniture has been rebuilt, and electrics have replaced.

Externally, there has been jet washing, landscaping, repointing and resurfacing as well as new astroturf laid for outdoor event space.

Deep cleaning and safety checks have been regularly carried out to ensure that the spa is opening at the highest hygiene and safety levels.

  • To celebrate the reopening of the spa, a limited-edition Winter Sparkle package complete with exclusive treatments and complimentary add-ons, is being offered.
