Two employers were recognised during a college’s most extensive celebration to date.
The ASPIRE Awards Evening celebrated the achievements of over 125 students at the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College and accolades given to two Staffordshire businesses recognised opportunities given to learners to explore careers in their chosen industries.
Leek Building Society was awarded the title of the ASPIRE Large Employer of the Year Award. The company has hosted site visits and work experience and T Level placements, participated in curriculum events and delivered talks to bring real-world context to classroom learning.
A college spokesperson said: “Leek Building Society’s continued enthusiasm, reliability, and willingness to invest in the future workforce have made them an exceptional employer partner.”
The ASPIRE SME Employer of Year Award went to sustainable packaging company Woolcool. The Stone-based company has engaged with the college’s curriculum through Dragon’s Den-style events, opened its doors to site tours and offered T Level industry placements.
The spokesperson added: “Their partnership with the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College has been inspiring and impactful.
“Their enthusiasm and commitment to developing young talent make them a truly outstanding SME partner.”

One of the evening’s most prestigious accolades – the Principal’s Award for A Level Student of the Year – was presented to second-year student James Davies.
He was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, alongside studying four A Levels and completing an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). James will soon attend a celebration at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his achievement.
First-year student Skye-Rose Mellor received the ASPIRE Independence Award in GCSE Business. Skye was commended for her strong work ethic and her ability to balance academic study with her passion for nail art.
And second-year student Tharuki Dulanma was awarded the ASPIRE Endeavour Award in Further Mathematics. Since arriving in the UK, Tharuki has embraced new challenges and made significant academic progress.
College Principal Lesley Morrey said: “The ASPIRE Awards Evening is a truly special occasion which celebrates not only our students’ academic and personal successes, but also the values that define our college — ambition, resilience, and community. We are incredibly proud of everything our students have achieved, and grateful to our staff, families, partners, and Potteries Educational Trust colleagues for the vital role they play in supporting our young people.”
The college’s largest-ever awards evening also included a talk by former student Royal Navy test pilot Commander Nathan Gray, who was the first British pilot to land an F-35B Lightning jet on HMS Queen Elizabeth.
