A new apprenticeship programme focused on low-carbon heating technologies is being launched in Stoke-on-Trent by training provider Spark Group.
The Hanley-based organisation has partnered with Performance Through People, who have offices in Cannock and Walsall, to offer six two-year apprenticeships in heat pumps and other green energy systems. A separate property maintenance apprenticeship is also planned to launch this summer.
Spark Group is now looking for local companies to host the apprentices throughout the duration of their placements. The new courses will run at the organisation’s training centre on Westmill Street in Hanley.
Founded in 2023 by Dan Canavan, the Spark Group aims to create training opportunities for young people interested in green energy careers.
Dan said: “The Government’s Warm Homes plan promotes cleaner energy solutions such as heat pumps and ground source heating, but this will not happen unless we can train a new green energy workforce.
“Currently, many gas and plumbing apprentices will take an additional short module on green energy solutions, but I believe we must go further. The apprenticeships will provide practical experience with classroom training, with trainees learning how to plan, install and maintain green energy solutions.”
The launch follows a six-month pilot programme, run on behalf of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, aimed at supporting young people not in education, employment or training. Eight learners took part, gaining qualifications in construction, environmental sustainability and employability.
Several local businesses contributed by offering practical experience placements, including Timberland DIY, ABC Exhibitions, Allcoat Decorating, Pulsed Electrical and the city council’s repairs and maintenance service.
John Adams, owner of Allcoat, said: “Young people don’t need a handout, they need a hand up. Someone once gave me a chance, so it is great to be in a position to give the same help to new starters. I have been able to help by showing basic practical skills, how to protect and prepare a work area, how to prepare a surface for painting, and how to use different methods to apply paints using brushes and rollers.”
Trainees also received support from construction tutor Brian Pepper and social entrepreneur Chris Parr, as well as visiting Keele University to see working wind turbines in operation.
