The deputy leader of Staffordshire County Council has welcomed news of JCB’s £100 million investment into its Rocester headquarters.
Daily Focus reported yesterday that the digger maker is investing in new ‘ultra-modern’ manufacturing facilities at its World HQ including the installation of a fully automated powder paint plant costing £60 million.
The shop floor is also set to be fully modernised with new machining centres, friction welders and cylinder boring machines.
JCB is celebrating its 80th birthday and celebrations held yesterday marked both the company’s anniversary and the 80th birthday of the founder’s son, current chairman Anthony Bamford.
All 19,000 JCB workers around the world are being given an additional day’s holiday to celebrate tomorrow.

Following the announcement, Martin Murray, pictured above, Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills, said: “This investment by JCB in its Rocester headquarters and fantastic news for Staffordshire and the UK.
“It’s a flagship company in our county and a global leader in its sector, as well as one of our largest employers with a skilled workforce. The company also has its own academy school which is an invaluable resource for young people in Staffordshire.
“Investment of this kind is a huge boost of confidence for the Staffordshire economy which is the beating heart of the country, and has a positive impact on supply chain businesses and future employment opportunities.”
Yesterday, Lord Bamford unveiled a blue heritage plaque on the spot where his father’s original garage stood in the High Street, Uttoxeter.
Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE made his first product – a farm trailer built largely from wartime scrap – from there, renting it out for 30 shillings a week.
Later in the day, Lord Bamford was greeted by more than 3,500 employees when he arrived back at the World HQ.

A cavalcade procession marked milestones and showcased machines he has introduced since becoming Chairman in 1975.
Addressing the crowds, Lord Bamford said: “My father would have been proud of JCB at 80. We have great products and great people making a difference in the world. We continue to hold true to his values of ‘jamais content’ (never content) and ‘always looking for a better way.’ While my father retired at the age of 59, I – along with JCB – shall be 80 tomorrow and I’m still here.”
A formal party with more than 100 invited guests followed.
