An insurance broker has been crowned the first recipient of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Business Community Hero Award for its work championing a children’s charity.
Wolstanton-based AMB Insurance raised £25,000 for the Peter Pan Centre last year and also supported its work helping children with special educational needs and disabilities by volunteering time and skills.
The company was one of five winners announced at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s fourth Borough Heroes Awards held on Thursday evening.
Council Leader Simon Tagg said: “Our Borough Heroes Awards is a meaningful legacy from the 850thanniversary celebrations; it reflects and further builds pride in our loyal and ancient borough. It’s a wonderful opportunity to honour those who quietly give their time and energy to others, helping to make Newcastle-under-Lyme such a special place to live, work and visit.
“We received a high number of entries this year which is fantastic. Every nominee should feel incredibly proud, and our winners truly represent the very best of the area. Their dedication helps to make it a stronger, greener, kinder and more connected place.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to historian Philip Leese, who has been the driving force behind the preservation of Kidsgrove heritage.
Newcastle District Scouts won the Civic Pride (Organisation) accolade, while Philip Pritchard, who litter picks and smartens up his local community, volunteers at parkrun and supports his neighbours, took the Civic Pride (Individual) title.
The Young Hero Award went to Sarah Edwards who helps her local community by charity fundraising, contributing to a foodbank and wellbeing initiatives alongside supporting people with disabilities through her work at Martec Training.
The event held at Keele in Town was supported by Capital & Centric, Ironmarket Wealth, Keele University, Newcastle & Stafford Colleges Group, Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District and TMT First.
