Campaign to support care-experienced young people through clay launches with matched funding boost

A Stoke-on-Trent arts organisation is calling on the public to back a project supporting care-experienced young people through clay, as part of a national fundraising campaign that will double donations.

British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) is taking part in the Big Give Arts for Impact campaign until 24 March, raising money for its Clay Together programme.

The initiative is designed to support children and young people who have experience of the care system, offering creative sessions in a safe and welcoming environment.

In March 2024, there were a record 1,156 children in care in the city, proportionally more than any other local authority in England. Many of these young people are said to face ongoing challenges including poor mental health, low confidence and social isolation.

Clay Together aims to tackle these issues through hands-on creative work with clay, helping participants build skills, connect with others and feel more confident.

Clare Wood, BCB’s Artistic Director and Chief Executive, said: “Clay Together offers a safe, welcoming space where young people can explore creativity, build confidence, develop skills and connect with peers who have had similar experiences. These sessions aren’t just workshops – they help young people feel seen, heard and valued.”

The programme has already been piloted, and the charity is now seeking funding to expand it into a full offer.

Through the Big Give campaign, all donations made during the week will be matched by funders, effectively doubling the impact of each contribution. Organisers say even small donations can make a difference, helping to provide materials and meaningful creative opportunities.
