A water filter company dating back almost 200 years has boosted its staff numbers by more than 25 per cent in the first half of 2025 as it targets turnover of £25 million by its big anniversary next year.

Doulton Water Filters, which manufactures drinking water filters and systems, has taken on 25 members of staff across its marketing, finance, operations, quality and technical departments.

The recruitment drive came on the back of continued growth.

Mark Manton, Doulton’s Head of Digital, said: “With an ever evolving and competitive landscape, the water filter market is expanding exponentially worldwide.

“By bringing specialist talent into our key marketing channels, these hires reflect our commitment to building insight driven marketing functions that will further grow as we scale our brand presence.”

Company founder John Doulton created the world’s first ceramic water filter in 1826, protecting against water contaminated with cholera bacteria, an innovation which set a new benchmark for water purity and safety.

The firm was commissioned by Queen Victoria to produce a water filter for the royal household and its domestic water filter was later introduced throughout the world.

The company was started in Lambeth, South London, but manufacturing to The Potteries when the government brought in clean air regulations in the 1950s. Its headquarters relocated in 1971.

Doulton Water Filters, which has also been located in Stone, has been based in Newcastle-under-Lyme for 20 years and now has 92 employees and customers in over 100 countries.

Its water filters stand out because of their use of high-quality natural ceramic materials and the ability to remove a broad range of contaminants while retaining essential minerals.

Technical Director Joy Delaney said: “We are proud to be growing our team right here in Staffordshire, continuing the Doulton legacy that began in Lambeth in 1826 and later took root here during the 1800s.

“As we look to the future, investing in our people and our community is central to how we grow responsibly and deliver meaningful value to our customers both globally and here in the UK.”
