The chief executive of YMCA North Staffordshire will retire next spring after more than two decades leading the organisation.

Danny Flynn, who has led the YMCA for 23 years, will remain in post until his retirement on 31 March 2026. He told colleagues and partners that his decision has been driven by family circumstances, as he steps back to become his wife’s primary carer, and paid tribute to the charity’s strategy, governance and senior leadership team.

During his tenure, YMCA North Staffordshire has expanded its services and community facilities, launched award-winning programmes and developed new support for vulnerable young people, families and communities. His leadership has also been recognised across the region for its impact on advocacy, partnership-building and raising aspirations.

Danny said: “It has been the greatest privilege of my working life to serve YMCA North Staffordshire and the young people we exist for.

“Together, we have achieved transformational change and built something truly special for this community. I am confident that the YMCA is in an excellent place for the future and look forward to seeing the next chapter unfold.”

The Board of Trustees said a structured succession process is underway to ensure continuity and stability.

Chair Glenn Handforth said: “Danny and I met in 2008, when he showed me an architect’s impression of what the Edinburgh House site might look like. It was clear from that moment Danny had a vision – not just for the building and its site, but for what services for young people could and should be.

“Nearly 20 years later, the artist’s drawing is reality, and things are different. With state-of-the-art creative and learning facilities on site, together with a fantastic sports hall and gymnasium, that original vision is testament to Danny and his team’s purpose and resilience in helping young people thrive.

“Danny has instilled passion and direction, which pulses throughout the campus, where young people are embracing the opportunities that the YMCA creates. It has been an honour to walk alongside Danny and his team.”
