Cameron Homes has been given the green light for a £39 million housing development on the former Bamford Works factory site in Uttoxeter.
The Chasetown-based firm will work with JCB to deliver 119 homes on the 15-acre site near the town centre, including 18 plots designed for elderly occupants.
The former JCB Heavy Products base has stood vacant since 2008, when operations moved to a new £40 million factory. The land had been linked to manufacturing for more than 130 years.
Construction and enabling works are expected to begin early this summer.
The scheme, known as Bamford Place, will include a mix of one- to five-bedroom homes, almost five acres of public open space and landscaped areas.
Cameron Homes will contribute £1.13 million to a package of funding initiatives to improve local facilities and infrastructure.
Kate Tait, group strategic land and planning director for Cameron Homes, said: “We are thrilled to receive the green light from East Staffordshire’s planning committee for such an exciting scheme that will add new vibrancy to Uttoxeter town centre. As a Staffordshire housebuilder, this project is perfectly aligned with our own social values, governance and sustainability strategy.
“Throughout the design and pre-construction process, we have been striving to deliver a scheme of the highest quality, reflecting the site’s prominent position on the edge of the town centre. There will be a comprehensive choice of home designs – from one-bedroom starter homes, to houses for young families, rightsizers and the elderly, through to executive five-bedroom detached residences.
“Each home will feature an array of traditional architectural detailing, complemented by beautiful open space, landscaping and heritage street furniture. Bamford Place will become a new community to behold, built with the core principle of providing a lasting legacy for the town.”
JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford said: “I have taken a keen personal interest in securing the best possible legacy for the Bamford Works site since it was vacated in late 2008. At every step along the way, I have wanted the redevelopment to be of the highest possible standard.
“My family has a long association with Uttoxeter and this site in particular. I’m very pleased with the approval for 119 new homes, as I really think this will put the heart back in the town centre. I look forward to Cameron Homes delivering an exemplary new development, that everyone can be proud of.”
