Council confirms August opening for Leek’s new health and wellbeing centre

1 min read

Leek’s long-awaited new health and wellbeing centre will open in August, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has announced.

The multi-million-pound redevelopment to expand and modernise the Brough Park facility has been underway for months, and the council previously said it would open in ‘late summer’.

However, it has confirmed the centre will welcome its first visitors in August, although the exact opening date has not yet been confirmed.

Construction work has now finished, the pools have been filled and new gym equipment will be delivered in the coming weeks.

Final testing and commissioning are now taking place, and an opening date will be set once this phase is finished.

MyActive, the council’s leisure partner, will launch a pre-sale programme soon followed by details of memberships, swimming lesson enrolment, and other activities. Residents have been told to keep an eye on social media to keep up-to-date with announcements.

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to announce the news we’ve all been waiting for – the doors will re-open and we’ll be welcoming people back in just a few weeks.

“It’s fantastic to be in the final stages of this major redevelopment project which will really wow everyone who visits. The centre is looking amazing – it’s going to be a game-changer for the people of Leek and the wider Moorlands.

“Having access to high quality leisure facilities which promote active lives and provide social spaces is a priority for the council – it underpins our physical and mental wellbeing and supports healthy lifestyles and community connections. We’re thrilled to be providing that for all our Moorlands residents and visitors here in Leek and developing plans for investments in Biddulph and Cheadle.”

The redeveloped centre will feature a new 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool, a larger teaching pool, an expanded gym, a second exercise studio, a dedicated indoor cycling studio, a community wellness suite and an indoor soft play area. Visitors will also benefit from a redesigned reception area, café seating and improved customer facilities.

Work on the outdoor facilities is expected to be completed by the end of July.  As well as new outdoor gym, residents with their own equipment will be able to enjoy a pétanque court, table tennis tables, a chess board, and other features including Active Trail signage from then, or wait until August to hire the necessary bats and balls.
