A shopping centre enjoying increased popularity has welcomed another new trader.
AJ African and Caribbean has opened at Longton Exchange Shopping Centre, in Stoke-on-Trent, providing residents with a unique shopping experience that celebrates the heritage of the two regions.
It is the 10th new independent business to open at the shopping centre in Longton town centre this year.
Owner Anwuli Ejefii, who has given up a job as a carer to open the shop, said: “There are more African and Caribbean people moving into Stoke-on-Trent now than ever before.
“These people need more authentic food available locally rather than travelling to Manchester or Birmingham to buy it.
“This is my first shop but I’m hoping more will follow.”
As well as selling groceries and frozen meat and seafood, the shop also sells hair extensions, wigs and hair and skincare products.
Shopping Centre Manager Chris Ward said: “AJ African and Caribbean marks the tenth new arrival to Longton Exchange this year.
“During 2023, we have worked hard to reduce the vacancy rate at Longton Exchange, whilst attracting new offerings that will be valuable for the community.
“As a centre, being able to introduce new offerings to Longton, such as this African and Caribbean store, will prove to be positive for the local community.”
Last month, Daily Focus reported that three new businesses – Pearl and Gray, Green Grams and a barber shop – had opened at the shopping centre.
They followed the arrival of other businesses such as dog accessories shop Sew Very Dog, reported in Daily Focus here, and Keep It Local, which features the work of around 70 local makers and artists, featured here.
