A full planning application has been submitted for the regeneration of the former Bass Brewery site in Burton upon Trent, with residents being encouraged to provide comments.

An array of projects have been outlined for the High Street site including turning Bass House into an immersive Brewing Heritage & Social History Experience, which incorporates the National Brewery Heritage Archive.

Work would include internal alterations and a single storey extension.

The planning application also seeks permission to convert The Water Tower into an interactive attraction and observation experience and turn Carling House, the former head office of Molson Coors, into a branded hotel.

Trent House would be demolished, and a two-storey Washlands Visitor Centre could be created.

A ‘sensitive’ refurbishment of Town House and a new space for public events are also part of the plans.

A document submitted with the planning application reads: “The plan for the site envisions a vibrant, mixed-use quarter that celebrates Burton’s brewing heritage.

The development proposes Bass House will be repurposed as a brewery heritage centre and exhibition space, serving as the focal point for visitors exploring Burton’s brewing history.

“The Water Tower will be sensitively adapted to include a viewing platform, offering views of the town and surrounding landscape.

“The plan incorporates generous public spaces, including a central plaza that can host events, and green corridors that improve connectivity with the Washlands and town centre.”

The redevelopment of the site has been a long-term strategic objective of East Staffordshire Borough Council.

Dr Harry White, Chairman of the National Brewery Heritage Trust, said: “We have been working alongside East Staffordshire Borough Council for well over a year in the development of plans for a new brewing heritage experience on the High Street.

“We know from our many conversations with the public that there is a great deal of support for this landmark project. Submitting the planning application for the overall site is a significant milestone for this.”

Councillor Paul Walker, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Burton’s proud brewing past is an important part of the town’s history and I would encourage residents of East Staffordshire to voice their opinions on the submitted plans.

“I am pleased to see us reach this important milestone and I look forward to seeing what the public think of the plans over the coming months.”

More public tours of Bass House are being organised.
