Green light for High Street transformation as council approves phased Towns Fund plan

1 min read

Plans to regenerate Burton upon Trent’s High Street have taken a step forward, with East Staffordshire Borough Council approving funding for the first three phases of development using the Government’s Towns Fund.

The scheme, which outlines work on the site over the next two years, includes the demolition of unused buildings, the conversion of historic properties and improvements to visitor facilities in a phased approach.

Phase 1 will focus on enabling works, including the demolition of Trent House and the Carling House Data Centre, while phase 2 will see the initial conversion of The Water Tower and the start of works on the Washlands Visitor Centres and Plaza. Phase 3 will involve the initial restoration of Bass House and the conversion of the rear of the building.

Councillor Louise Walker, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “I’m absolutely delighted the initial phases of the High Street site plans have been approved. The site has a lot of memories and connections with people in the town, and it would be great to see the activity in the buildings and area. This is an important development for Burton upon Trent and I’m really looking forward to seeing the initial phase commence later this year.”

The first part of the High Street project – the enhancement of The Washlands – is due for completion in summer 2025.

A further milestone will be the announcement of a proposed food and drink operator for Bass House, with the council in advanced discussions with a ‘respected hospitality operator who would provide a high quality and relaxed all-day food and drinks offering’. Further details are expected later this year.
