A new independent bookshop is set to open at Amerton after its owner decided to follow her dream in the wake of a life-changing cancer diagnosis.

Charley Hughes, who previously worked as a bookkeeper in her family’s haulage company, will launch The Bookery on Saturday, 7 March, in the artisan area at Amerton Farm.

The Bookery, which has previously run book clubs and pop-ups, will specialise in popular Blind Date with a Book bundles, alongside shelves of new titles across a range of genres. The shop will also stock reading accessories including bookmarks and other book-themed gifts.

Charley said: “Last year, I was unfortunately diagnosed with a form of blood cancer, and it made me stop and really think about what I’ve always wanted to do, and books came to mind right away.

“I’ve always loved reading and being part of the book community, and for years I’ve dreamed of opening a bookshop, ideally with a little café too. But I wanted to start small, do it properly, and build something warm and welcoming from the ground up. That’s how we found our way to Amerton.”

Initially, the shop will be run by Charley, with help from her husband and mother. On the opening day, customers can expect cake and goodie bags for the first 20 people through the door, with the possibility of additional surprises.

Charley said: “We’ve invested a lot of time, care, and savings into getting it right, and we’re building it steadily and sustainably.

“Physical bookshops still matter because they offer something you can’t get online: connection, discovery, and a real sense of community.

“In a good bookshop you can wander, browse and stumble across something you didn’t know you needed. You can pick it up, read the first page, feel the cover and get that little spark of ‘this is the one’.

“I’m honestly really excited – and a little bit nervous in a good way. I can’t wait to open and start sharing all the books, bundles, and little bookish finds with fellow readers. It’s going to feel so special finally welcoming everyone in.”

The Bookery will be open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm.
