New jewellery shop to open in historic Lichfield building after six-figure revamp

1 min read

A Lichfield jeweller is returning to his roots after launching a new independent shop in a historic city centre building following a six-figure investment.

Cathedral Jewellers Lichfield will open on Market Street on Saturday 18 April, marking a ‘full-circle’ moment for co-director Adam Hogg.

Adam, who trained as a goldsmith at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham after his GCSEs, spent 27 years with City Jewellers of Lichfield – but around 18 months ago, he learned the shop was set to close, prompting him to take the leap into running his own business.

The new shop occupies the same Market Street premises where City Jewellers were originally based before moving to Bore Street – and where Adam completed work experience at the age of 15.

The three-storey building, opposite Samuel Johnson’s Birthplace, has also housed a wool shop and a leather shop.

Adam said: “It felt like it was a sign when it became empty. I feel like things have come a full circle. People in the town have fond memories of this shop and are very excited about it becoming a jewellers again.”

Since January, the property has undergone extensive renovation after being left in a poor condition by previous tenants. Investment has been made into the building and its refurbishment, excluding stock.

Adam said: “We have been renovating it since January because it was left in an awful state by the previous tenants. We have gone back to bare plaster and had new floorboards.

“It’s going to be very special. We’re offering high end jewellery and one-off pieces. I have been making pieces myself and we also have pieces from other designers that I have known from a long time – things that no one else will have.”

The shop will trade across two floors, with a dedicated bridal area including bespoke wedding rings on the first floor, with the top floor used for offices and workshops for repairs.

Adam, who is launching the business alongside his wife Amy and a team of three full-time staff, said the move represents a long-held ambition.

He said: “I have wanted my own shop from the age of 15 but you get so reliant on your income and your dreams get pushed to the side.

“Being made redundant gave me the push. I have never wanted to do anything else. This is a huge step for us. I would be silly not to be nervous, but I’m also very excited.”

The official opening will be marked by a visit from the Lord Mayor and the town crier.
