Tamworth Borough Council has launched a formal review into whether a new town council should be created for the borough.
Councillors approved the start of a Community Governance Review (CGR) at a full council meeting last week, beginning a process that will seek the views of residents, community groups and other stakeholders.
The review will cover the whole borough and will examine whether introducing a town council would better reflect the identity and needs of the local community.
As part of the process, the council will consider governance arrangements including ward boundaries, the number of councillors and the possible structure and name of any future town council.
A cross-party councillor working group will oversee the review to ensure it is carried out in line with statutory requirements.
Stephen Gabriel, chief executive for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “This is an exciting step for Tamworth. By exploring the creation of a town council, local people can shape how governance arrangements are tailored to serve our community’s needs both now and in the future.
“We encourage everyone to get involved and share their views as the review progresses.”
The consultation is due to begin in late June and the review is expected to take up to 12 months, with final recommendations presented to full council for a decision.
If approved, elections for the new town council would take place in May 2028, initially for a three-year term.

How does fit with the county council, Borough Council changes namely what would be the remit that isn’t covered but the new Unitary council? Might it for example better protect local assets like the Castle ?
