Three Staffordshire companies have been named among the UK’s favourite independent firms as part of this year’s Small Business Saturday campaign.

The Bookery bookshop, fragrance brand COW Home & Beauty and Nature Makers, an organisation which helps families connect with nature and themselves through art, craft and play, all feature on a list of 107 Nation’s Favourite Businesses in the run-up Small Business Saturday on 5 December.

The list aims to showcase the UK’s entrepreneurial spirit.

The Bookery is an independent, dog-friendly bookshop which launched at Amerton Farm near Stafford earlier this year.

Owner Charley Huges has since closed the pod at Amerton to prepare to open a shop in Swadlincote in Derbyshire but still sells at local venues including The Hub at St Mary’s in Lichfield.

The Bookery’s Nation’s Favourite Businesses listing reads: “The Bookery are passionate about supporting independent authors and local small businesses through their Indie Author shelves and Rent a Shelf scheme. More than a bookshop, The Bookery is a welcoming community space where readers can connect through book clubs, events, workshops and a shared love of discovering great stories.”

A Bookery spokesperson said: “From starting the business and wrapping books on a small table in my living room to starting markets, pop ups and now a full-blown book shop. We have grown so much.”

Hednesford’s COW Home & Beauty describes its handmade home, bath and beauty products as “affordable feel-good luxury” and “fragrance that gets noticed”.

The award-winning company was founded in 2022, and its most popular products include whipped soaps and perfumes.

A Small Business Saturday spokesperson said: “With a focus on quality, innovative products and exceptional customer service, COW Home & Beauty have a genuine passion for helping customers across the UK enjoy everyday luxury at affordable prices.”

Nature Makers started as a small class in Tamworth and has grown into a nationwide movement with franchises across the UK.

Founded by business strategist Faye Smith, the firm’s practitioners have been praised for delivering classes, workshops, school programme, family events, adult wellbeing sessions and community projects that “help people slow down, connect and thrive”.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign to support small businesses and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’.

Before this year’s Small Business Saturday, Daily Focus will again be running a feature showcasing some local firms to support in the run up to Christmas.

  1. The Bookery need to attend to their website. The visit us page resolves to an error page, there are no easily discernible contact details. A real shame because I have a bookworm here who would love to know more!
