Family-run wind-powered campsite launches after three-year build

A new family-run campsite built by the owner himself has launched in the Staffordshire Moorlands enjoying a strong opening month.

Richmore Hall Campsite, based on farmland in Dilhorne, has been consistently fully booked since opening in August. The small site offers pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents, combining modern facilities with a rural setting and panoramic views.

Owner Tom Bagnall built the site himself over three years at a cost of around £25,000 for materials, as he was able to borrow diggers and plant equipment from his father.

And he has told Daily Focus he has plans to add more facilities further during the winter months.

He said: “It was a massive job – I did all the utilities and the shower blocks, and it took a lot of money, time and sacrifice. It’s a huge relief to have it open and see people enjoying it.”

Tom, who has a background in mechanical engineering and motorsport, runs the business with his wife Libnah. While he has taken charge of construction and on-site operations, she has built the website and manages promotion and admin.

Facilities include a free shower room, a kitchenette area known as The Shack with a fridge and laundry, and fully serviced pitches with electricity, water and grey water disposal – and the dog-friendly site is entirely powered by its own 80kW wind turbine.

Prices start at £23 per night for a non-electric tent pitch, rising to £34 for a fully serviced hard-standing pitch for two adults.

The business will close in mid-November for the winter and reopen in April. During the off-season, Tom plans to expand the facilities further, including a hot tub, sauna and outdoor bar, as well as introducing chickens and a small herd of rare-breed sheep to the site.

The couple say guests are attracted by the site’s peaceful location in the heart of the Moorlands and the personal service.

Tom said: “I’m greeting everybody myself on site at the moment and I think people like that personal touch.

“It has been very satisfying to build something that works. We are always trying to do the best we can for people and it has turned out really well.”
