Future vision for Tamworth Town Hall as feasibility study begins

1 min read

Tamworth Borough Council has commissioned a comprehensive feasibility study into the future use of its Grade II* listed town hall.

Architectural practice Stephen George + Partners LLP (SGP), which has offices in London, Leicester, Leeds, Solihull and Birmingham, has been appointed to lead the study, supported by a specialist project team. The work aims to safeguard the Market Street building’s historic character while exploring new ways it can support civic, cultural and community life.

The project is funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), a planning charge used to fund infrastructure improvements that benefit local developments.

The study will assess its condition, capacity and limitations of the town hall, which was built in 1701, and develop a range of options that balance heritage protection with opportunities for new uses. Residents, community groups, heritage advisors, staff and councillors will be invited to contribute.

Interest in the project was high, with more than 30 architectural firms attending site visits and 30 formal submissions received.

Councillor Lewis Smith, portfolio holder for people services, engagement, leisure and heritage, said: “Tamworth Town Hall is one of our town’s greatest treasures and has stood in Tamworth for over 300 years. This feasibility study is more than protecting bricks and mortar – it’s about making sure the building plays a meaningful role in our community for years to come.

“The level of response from specialist architects has helped us to secure what we believe to be a high-quality and best-value supplier.

“With expert partners and strong community involvement, we will identify a sustainable future that honours our heritage while supporting our vision for a vibrant, thriving town centre.”

SGP’s previous projects include Grade II-listed sites such as Halifax bus station and Leicester Synagogue, with a team including conservation-accredited architects and specialists in sustainable, accessible design.

Sue Eyre, lead architect at Stephen George + Partners, said: “As local architects, this project is especially significant for us, and we are delighted to have been appointed.

“At SGP, we have a proven track record with civic and heritage assets, as well as significant expertise in feasibility studies and community projects, and we look forward to working closely with the council, stakeholders and residents.

“This is a key opportunity to deliver meaningful placemaking in the town centre, ensuring the Town Hall remains both a proud landmark and a valuable community asset for the future.”
