Staffordshire’s family-owned businesses unite to shape future support

1 min read

Family-owned businesses from across Staffordshire gathered at Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce for an open and honest conversation about the challenges, opportunities and support needs of family-run enterprises.

The workshop brought owners and leaders together to share experiences and explore what makes family businesses unique, from long histories and close relationships to the overlap between family and commercial decision-making.

The session was led by Duncan Simcox and Heather Whitehead, both experienced in supporting family businesses and leadership teams across multiple sectors.

Explaining the purpose behind the event, Duncan said that much of his work centres on helping family-owned businesses navigate their distinctive challenges. “Heather and I co-hosted this forum because we see how valuable it is when family businesses share experiences and practical solutions together,” he said. “Partnering with Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce was a perfect fit.”

Heather emphasised the importance of creating space for leaders to pause and reflect. “Reflection is an often neglected leadership skill, and Duncan and I specialise in creating space for leaders to really take a step back and gain clarity.” she said. “I look forward to continuing to develop this forum to support the long-term sustainability and growth of this important sector within our local business community.”

The workshop ended with a group discussion on what support family-owned businesses need from the Chambers and other networks, helping shape future activity.

Chris Plant, Interim CEO of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “Family-owned businesses play a vital role in our local economy. Sessions like this ensure the support we offer reflects what businesses truly need.”

The next workshop will take place at Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce on 22nd April at 9:30am – 12:00pm. Pastries and refreshments will be available from 9:00 am.
