A new indoor climbing centre could be on its way to the Staffordshire Moorlands under new plans which have been unveiled.
Peak Climbing School has applied for planning permission to turn a unit at Leekbrook Industrial Estate, in Leekbrook, near Leek, into an indoor bouldering, climbing and training gym with a café.
The company, which is based in Upper Hulme, says at least four full-time and six part-time jobs would be created with the venture, which would be open to schools as well as members of the public.
A planning statement submitted to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council with the application reads: “The adventure activities industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and as a result of its success the company has outgrown its existing site and needs to expand into larger premises, which will allow them to continue to grow in a sustainable manner.”
The unit currently has permission to operate as storage and distribution premises so Peak Climbing School is looking for consent to change the use of the building.
According to planning documents, the new attraction would be open 8am until 10pm Monday to Friday and between 9am and 6pm at the weekend and on bank holidays.
The document adds: “The indoor climbing centre proposed in this application will help to facilitate participation in climbing and bouldering and in doing so will make a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of residents within the Moorlands, in accordance with the objectives of the Move More Strategy.”
A decision on the plans is expected in the coming weeks.
