T Levels expert Meryl Finney: How your business will benefit from offering placements to Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group students

1 min read

T Levels are designed to prepare students for the world of work and boost the skills pipeline for employers. Here Meryl Finney, NSCG’s T Level Manager, informs business leaders about the details and opportunities of the scheme.

Shaping the workforce of the future

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) is excited to be the region’s biggest provider of T Levels alongside an extensive range of academic, vocational and apprenticeship qualifications.

T Levels are arguably the biggest reform to technical training in a generation, designed to give young people the skills, knowledge and attitude to excel in their careers.

They are equivalent to 3 A Levels and have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry, whilst preparing students for entry into skilled employment, an apprenticeship or related technical study through further or higher education.

T Levels have been designed to bridge the employment “skills gap” by providing industry placements and students will have a robust foundation upon which to build personal ‘soft skills’, confidence and technical skills, within their field of study.

How T Levels Work

Alongside the academic study learners complete over the 2 years, students have to complete a 315 hour (45 day) work placement with an employer*.

NSCG support employers and build a strong commitment from both parties in terms of the student’s placement hours, frequency and duration, together with clearly defined expectations with regards to student conduct. Each T Level has a placement officer who will on a regular basis communicate with the employer and assess skills, core competencies and progress.
