Staffordshire lands shortlist place in international industry awards

Place-marketing promoter We Are Staffordshire is up against competition from around the world on a shortlist for a prestigious international award. 

It has been named as a finalist in the Best Citizen Engagement category at the international City Nation Place Awards, where previous winners include Brand Ukraine, Tourism Fiji, Seattle Southside Tourism and Brixton BID

We Are Staffordshire is shortlisted against Chile, Costa Rica and Tasmania for its work to engage young people young people in the county. 

Earlier this year, it launched a creative campaign to raise civic pride while inspiring and educating young residents through art.  

Eleven workshops took place in schools, with freelance artists working with pupils to create bunting, collages, line drawings and dance – all asking pupils to consider what Staffordshire means to them.  

Work was displayed at World of Wedgwood, in Barlaston, and Lichfield Cathedral during Staffordshire Day celebrations.

Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills Philip White said: “Being selected alongside countries, globally recognised cities and large regions is an outstanding achievement in itself. 

“And to be shortlisted for this award will put us on the international stage for our work within the county to engage with our communities and develop a collective sense of pride in our place.”  

The winner will be announced at the City Nation Place Awards dinner in London on Thursday, 7 November.

• Businesses are also invited to join We Are Staffordshire’s  October Ambassador event  at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 10 October.  The focus will be on steps to success for starting and growing a business in Staffordshire. 

Jason Howlett, CEO of fast-growing sustainable energy specialist GivEnergy , is keynote speaker and there will be a panel debate to share practical advice, discuss opportunities and provide support.
