World-famous Aardman Animations to host free game development workshop in Stoke-on-Trent

Internationally renowned animation studio Aardman – home of Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Creature Comforts – is coming to Stoke-on-Trent.

A free one-day workshop for 16 to 30-year-olds who live in Stoke-on-Trent will take place at Framescape, in Stoke town centre, on Wednesday, October 30.

Mike Jones, senior games artist from Aardman Animations, will lead a series of sessions focusing on different aspects of game development, including testing game mechanics, vision sheets, and exploring and developing the game world perspective.

Aardman Animation, based in Bristol, is known for films and television series made using stop motion and clay animation techniques. Its stop-motion films are among the highest-grossing produced and are known around the world.

The news of the workshop comes after Daily Focus reported yesterday that Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Gareth Snell secured parliamentary time to debate the city’s fast-growing, successful creative sector in the city.

A push is being made for Stoke-on-Trent’s creative sector to be recognised as one of six new formal creative clusters.

Organiser Dan Waterman, of Carse and Waterman Productions, one of the founding businesses of the local creative cluster, said: “At Framescape, we mainly host masterclasses and workshops led by local businesses to show young people the opportunities in Stoke-on-Trent.

“Occasionally, we like to mix things up, and partnering with Aardman felt perfect since, like many Stoke businesses, they’ve built success from clay. We hope to get plenty of applicants, but spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.”

The workshop takes place from 9.30am until 3pm. Places are limited and booking is essential.
