A Staffordshire college group has launched a global esports tournament for students with a €5,000 prize pool.

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) has partnered with electronics manufacturing services company Incap Corporation – whose UK factory is based in Newcastle-under-Lyme – to launch the Incap Legends tournament, open to student teams from around the world.

The one-day competition will take place remotely on May 10 and will feature matches in the game Apex Legends, a team-based battle royale game. The tournament aims to promote interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and provide students with exposure to the electronics and technology sectors.

A total of 40 teams, each made up of three players, will compete in the event. While the competition is aimed primarily at students, it will also include participation from selected Incap factory teams. The tournament is free to enter and open to students aged 16 and over.

NSCG, which has an established esports programme, will be among the participants. The college has previously delivered professional-level competitions in collaboration with schools, industry partners and youth organisations.

Robin Tankard, lecturer and esports course leader at NSCG, said: “We’re proud to be working with Incap on this tournament, which gives students a chance to apply their skills in a real competitive environment and connect with the wider world of technology. It’s opportunities like this that show how esports can bridge the gap between education and industry in meaningful ways.”

Otto Pukk, President and CEO of Incap Corporation, said: “We believe in staying ahead of the curve. Esports is more than entertainment – it’s a fast-paced, strategic and collaborative environment that helps develop skills that are also essential in engineering and electronics.

“Through Incap Legends we hope to spark curiosity and build new pathways into our industry, helping students discover career opportunities in technology and engineering.”

Registration is now open. For more information, including registration and tournament guidelines, click here.
