Young people with big ambitions were recognised for completing a 13-week business programme designed to kickstart their entrepreneurial journeys.

Held at Commerce House, home of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, the YESS Foundation graduation ceremony celebrated 11 students who completed the Business Basics programme – a free initiative aimed at equipping 12–22-year-olds with key entrepreneurial skills.

The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Councillor Steve Watkins, joined families, business leaders and supporters to honour the group’s achievements.

The Lord Mayor said: “It was a pleasure to be in the same space as so many talented and inspiring young people.

“Thank you for allowing me to share in your journey. To those who are already succeeding in their own business and to the next generation your entrepreneurial skills, energy, and dedication came through loud & clear, I wish you all the very best for a successful career”.

In a sign of the programme’s growing reach, two students travelled from Scotland to attend the ceremony, while another joined virtually from Colombia.

YESS Foundation-UK’s Head, Denise Pitot, opened the event by acknowledging the milestone moment for the national project, which aims to prepare 1,000 young people for business each month.

Local business owners and leaders were joined by the Lord Mayor for the ceremony at Commerce House

Denise said: “This is more than a graduation – it’s a reminder that when young people are given tools, encouragement, and belief, they step up.

“Our vision is ambitious but necessary: to make 1,000 young people per month business-ready. Today’s celebration shows that we’re on our way.”

Guests also heard from local business professionals who have supported the initiative as speakers and mentors. Tomasz Putynkowski, an accountant who grew up working in his family’s business, gave an engaging talk about the value of education, strategy and confidence in enterprise.

“I’m not your typical accountant,” said Tomasz.

My passion lies in helping people protect their future and bring their business vision to life through understanding, strategy, and confidence.”

Also involved in the programme was business mentor Richard Charles from ActionCOACH, who worked with students throughout their course alongside facilitator Miriam Chigodho.

The keynote speaker was Leeroy Chax, founder of Chax Barbers, who shared how he built a successful chain of barbershops, academies and social enterprises after launching his first business aged 19.

Chris Plant, Deputy Chief Executive of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, praised the young graduates and the value of the programme.

Chris said: “These young people are future leaders, and it was fantastic to welcome them to Commerce House as they start their entrepreneurial journeys.

“Supporting them today means investing in a stronger, more vibrant tomorrow.”

The YESS Foundation-UK is powered by volunteers and relies on donations from parents, businesses and individuals to ensure it remains free for all participants. With five more cohorts due to graduate this year, the programme continues to gather momentum. To register a young person for an upcoming course, please click here.
