A contract manufacturer is ramping up its investment into new technology with the arrival of a new laser cutting machine described as marking a major milestone in the firm’s journey to expand capabilities, boost precision and deliver greater value to customers.
Mec Com Fabrications has invested in the region of £430,000 in the TRUMPF Trulaser1030 system following its best-ever year for sales last year.
The company, based in Hixon, near Stafford, has also just had around 200 solar panels – as many as currently allowed – installed on its roof in an investment which has been supported by funds from the government. The panels give Mec Com 90kWp of solar generation capacity.
New CNC equipment has also been brought in, a new ERP system is expected next year and new live storage system is also planned for the end of 2026, subject to a good year in business this year.

Managing Director Richard Bunce said: “The investment in this cutting-edge technology reflects our commitment to innovation, quality, and staying ahead in a competitive industry. The TRUMPF laser will enhance our ability to produce complex parts faster, more efficiently, and with superior accuracy.
“This machine is quite unique and different, the first in the UK, and is designed specifically for those who have customers that require a large number of different batches.
Mec Com Fabrications employs just over 100 members of staff in Hixon and just under 100 people in Cluj-Napoca in Romania.
Last year, Mec Com Fabrications hit €28 million (more than £24 million) in sales across its two sites, representing a record year.
Its customers are predominantly in the electrical distribution industry but some also come from rail and high-end lighting systems.
Richard added: “Little by little we are increasing our level of automation. We see so many changes coming in in manufacturing, we want to stay ahead of the game and remain relevant in a changing world.”
