Vehicle charging specialist Allego has opened its largest UK charging hub in Stoke-on-Trent, positioning the city as a key stop on the national EV map while creating fresh opportunities for local businesses.
The 12-bay ultra-fast hub, located on Uttoxeter Road close to Gladstone Pottery Museum, sits directly on the A50, a high-traffic corridor linking Manchester, Derby and the wider Midlands.
The site is designed to capture both passing trade and a fast-growing local market, with EV ownership in Stoke-on-Trent estimated at 1,500 vehicles and projected to rise to 58,000 by 2030.
For nearby retailers, hospitality venues and attractions, the hub is expected to deliver valuable dwell time.
Drivers typically spend 20 to 40 minutes at ultra-fast chargers, creating a window for secondary spend while they wait.
Allego has confirmed it is actively exploring partnerships with local businesses to encourage drivers to plug in, shop, and spend locally – turning EV adoption into a direct economic driver.
Paz Sharma, UK Managing Director at Allego, said: “This site marks a milestone in our UK rollout and is a strong example of how EV infrastructure can support local economies. By making ultra-fast charging convenient and reliable, we not only accelerate adoption but also create new commercial opportunities for surrounding businesses.”
The development supports the government’s push to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles, while strengthening Stoke-on-Trent’s appeal as a connected, sustainable city.
Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said: “This investment ensures we are ready to meet demand while boosting footfall for local businesses and underpinning cleaner, quieter streets.”
Located at 197a Uttoxeter Road, ST3 1QN, the hub is one of 27 Allego sites now live across the UK.
