Visitors descended on an international development facility for the country’s first celebration of the International Day of Ceramics.

Organised by trade body Ceramics UK in partnership with The AMRICC Centre in Stone, last week’s brought together representatives from government, industry, universities and business groups.

Guests were welcomed for a programme of presentations designed to broaden the view and perception of ceramics in the UK, and based on the themes ‘hidden in plain sight’ and ‘critical enabler.’

Speakers included Rob Flello, chief executive of Ceramics UK, Dr Cathryn Hickey, chief executive of The AMRICC Centre, and Richard Goodhead, chief marketing officer at Lucideon. They were joined by industry figures Tim Evans of Mantec Technical Ceramics and Greg Astill of Ibstock plc.

Rob said: “The day was a great success and provided a dynamic platform to put the products, components, and processes that are key to modern living at the very front and centre of the conversation.

“We were able to show how ceramics are fundamental to performance technology, and that they make the modern world possible, and make the modern world work.”

Delegates were also given a tour of the flagship facility, the UK’s centre of excellence for advanced ceramic technologies, which is hosted and managed by Lucideon and recently celebrated its first full year of operation.

Cathryn added: “Ceramics matter in shaping the world and moving us into the future.

“The day was a great opportunity to showcase that, and share the developments being made in Staffordshire to put ceramics and advanced ceramics on the national and international stage in a wide range of critical environments.”

Launched by the International Ceramics Federation in 2025, the International Day of Ceramics is a global initiative designed to raise awareness of the essential role ceramics play in everyday life and state-of-the-art innovation, celebrating the creativity, technology, and expertise of the sector while inspiring future generations.
