A 52-year-old who has swapped a childcare career for a plumbing apprenticeship has been named Adult Learner of the Year at Burton and South Derbyshire College’s Further Education and Apprenticeship Awards.
Ruth Binks was praised by judges for her “dedication, professionalism and resilience” within an often male-dominated field after deciding to develop a skill within the trade industry.
She spends four days a week with social housing organisation Trent & Dove, based in Burton upon Trent, and one day at the college where she is gaining a plumbing and heating technician Level 3 qualification.
Ruth said learning on the job has given her the experience and confidence needed to progress in her new career.
She added: “I hope my experience inspires others to consider an apprenticeship, whatever stage of life they are at. Apprenticeships provide a fantastic opportunity to gain new skills, achieve recognised qualifications and build confidence in a chosen career.
“I’m proud to show that it’s never too late to learn something new and that apprenticeships are for people of all ages.”
Trent & Dove CEO Ursula Bennion said: “We are incredibly proud of Ruth and this well-deserved recognition. Her determination to embrace a new career, continue learning and excel in a skilled trade is truly inspiring.
“Ruth embodies the values we champion at Trent & Dove – commitment, inclusion, personal growth and creating opportunities for everyone to succeed, regardless of their background or stage in life.
“We believe our colleagues are our greatest strength, and we are committed to providing an environment where people feel supported to reach their potential.
“Ruth’s achievement is a fantastic example of what can be accomplished when talent, hard work and opportunity come together, and we hope her story encourages others to pursue their ambitions with confidence.”
