A Stoke-on-Trent engineering business has raised more than £43,000 for Dougie Mac as part of an ambitious company-wide charity challenge.
Fletcher Moorland, based in Stoke, has collected £43,925 so far after launching an “Around the World in 80 Days” fundraising campaign in support of the hospice charity.
The challenge has seen staff cycle and run on exercise bikes and treadmills set up in the company’s conference room, with the team aiming to cover the equivalent of the circumference of the Earth — 24,901 miles — in 80 days.
With just weeks remaining, employees have already completed 20,079 miles, leaving fewer than 5,000 miles to go.
The campaign forms part of a wider £80,000 fundraising appeal for Dougie Mac, a charity Fletcher Moorland says has long-standing personal significance for many of its 120 staff.
Operations director Di Bouchier said: “We’ve always supported the Dougie Mac here. Everyone knows somebody who’s been cared for or who has been supported by their wonderful staff. My sister’s final days were in the great care of the Dougie Mac.”
The appeal has also included a series of business and public giveaways to encourage donations, including £2,000 worth of advertising exposure on the A34 billboard, a luxury weekend break, and the opportunity to play JCB Golf & Country Club as guests of Fletcher Moorland.
The company is marking its 80th anniversary this year, having been founded in 1946 by electrical engineer Sam Fletcher. It remains family owned and is now led by Matt Fletcher, the founder’s grandson.
The fundraising campaign will culminate at Fletcher Moorland’s 80th Gala Dinner at the Bet365 Stadium on July 4.
Matt Fletcher said: “£1,000 for every year we’ve been in business, let’s do this.”
