Ideas needed on future of town’s historic market

Residents and businesses are being invited to share their ideas for the future of Cheadle Market Hall and Square as plans for a major regeneration project continue to develop.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, which bought the indoor market and outdoor market space in September 2024, is preparing proposals for investment in the site as part of wider ambitions to revitalise Cheadle town centre.

Emerging plans for the market include a stronger focus on food and drink, artisan and craft stalls, indoor seating areas, outdoor event space and extended evening opening hours to support the town’s night-time economy.

The council is now inviting people with an interest in the future of the town centre to attend a public event on Wednesday, June 3, where the latest proposals will be discussed.

Councillor Darren Price, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: “The Market Hall and Square are central to our regeneration plans in Cheadle and at the heart of creating the right conditions to support a strong local economy in the future.

“So it’s really important that we get this right. That’s why we want to hear from you – we know residents and businesses will have plenty of ideas and we want to listen to everyone who has an interest in making this project successful before we make any final decisions.

“Thanks to everyone who has already shared their views and I hope as many people as possible will be able to join us for the tour and the discussion next week. Everyone is welcome and I look forward to hearing what you have to say.”

Since taking ownership of the market buildings, the district council has carried out safety works, introduced a stall booking system and installed bollards around the square.

It also appointed consultants with experience of developing markets – Esther Worboys and Stride Treglown – to look at options for developing the site.

Previous consultations with traders, residents and businesses have shown strong support for retaining a market in Cheadle, with many calling for a more vibrant destination with extended opening hours that could host community activities and events.

Current proposals include a redesigned indoor market hall with food, beverage and retail stalls, an arcade area reflecting the site’s original design and a separate pop-up outdoor market. A planning application is expected this summer, with the revamped market potentially opening in 2028 if approved.

Anyone wishing to take part in the latest consultation event is asked to meet at the Market Hall at 12.50pm for a tour, followed by refreshments and a discussion session at the Guild Hall from 2pm.
