One of Staffordshire’s oldest churches is preparing to launch as a premier wedding and events venue following its acquisition by businessman Mo Chaudry.
Grade II-listed St John’s the Baptist Church, set within the grounds of Barlaston Hall, dates back to the 12th century and became part of the Chaudry family’s business portfolio after Mo and wife Ann bought the estate earlier this year.
A ‘significant’ investment has been made into the church since then, including the creation of a new car park, and a new access pathway.
Plans are also being developed for an orangery, which would create additional space and offer greater flexibility for weddings and events.
The deconsecrated church will continue to host weddings already booked for 2026, and booking enquiries for weddings, private celebrations, corporate events and other special occasions are coming in for availability as far ahead as 2029.
Broadcast journalist and PR specialist Tamsin Parker, owner of Legs PR, has been appointed Event Director to oversee the venue’s development and management.
An official launch event is being held between 11am and 3pm on Sunday, 6 September for people to view the venue and find out what it has to offer.

Mo said: “St John’s Church is an exceptional historic building, and we’re committed to ensuring it has a vibrant future while preserving its remarkable heritage. Ann and I strongly believe that although Barlaston Hall is our family home, we are also the custodians of a remarkable piece of history, and it is up to us to protect it and the church’s legacy. We know how important it is to the community as it is to us.
“The church has already hosted many wonderful weddings and events over the years. Our ambition now is to build on that legacy by investing in the venue and developing it into one of Staffordshire’s premier destinations for weddings and special occasions.”
Talking about Tamsin’s appointment, he added: “With her experience and connections, I have full confidence that St John’s is going to go from strength to strength and I’m delighted to have her on board. Our plan is to build a business that respects the church’s incredible history while creating unforgettable experiences for future generations.”
Tamsin said “I feel incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity by Mo to oversee such an extraordinary venue. It’s a fantastic opportunity and I’m grabbing it with both hands.
“St John’s Church is a breathtaking building with centuries of history, and it’s a real privilege to play a part in its next chapter. Mo has given me carte blanche to make the venue my own and I’ve got some exciting plans in the pipeline with some fantastic suppliers already on board.”
Barlaston Hall and St John’s Church are deeply connected to Josiah Wedgwood, with a number of Wedgwood memorials in the church.
